Waste Management in Kathmandu 1.04 – Teku Transfer Station
Field Visit to Teku Transfer Station
We have visited three private organizations which are working in solid waste management in Bhaktapur. Also, they have been doing the same work in some parts of Kathmandu and Lalitpur.
Up to now we have concluded the following things from field visits in Bhaktapur:
1) Most of the work of collection, segregation and transfer of solid waste is done by private organization in valley.
2) The segregation plant of the private organization are not well managed. Some are under the bridge while some are near river side. Though, recyclable materials are segregated and composting has also been started.
3) After segregation, the waste collected by the private organization directly goes to Sisdol. They have their own vehicle to transfer the waste.
So, we headed to Teku Transfer station for more info on the management of waste of Lalitpur and Kathmandu.
In Teku transfer station the waste from all over the Kathmandu, Bhaktpaur and Lalitpur is collected. But the waste collected in Teku is brought by the Government Vehicles. The waste collected by Private organization is not brought here. So, mostly the waste from the major highway and core city where the waste is collected in trucks is transferred here. Also, the waste which is dumped in streets, roads and chowks etc. are also carried by the government trucks.
The waste collected in Teku isn’t segregated. The principle here is
“What comes in, that goes out “.

| Teku Transfer Staion, Compound |
There are a lot of segregation plants or shop just opposite to the Teku transfer station compound where wastes from many places are brought. These waste are brought from private organization. Huge number of plastic bottles and metals are segregated and exported to India from these shops.
But the waste which goes inside the compounds are not segregated. They are directly transported to the Sisdol. It’s because Teku transfer station is run by the government and government is not giving much priority in recycling business.
Now we will be visiting to the Sisdol landfill site for understanding the following things:
1) Location suitability
2) Management process
3) Gas pipes lying and its disposal
4) Leachate treatment
