FINENESS TEST OF CEMENT
FINENESS TEST OF CEMENT
OBJECTIVE
To check the fineness of given cement
APPARATUS REQUIRED
1. Cement
2. Weighing machine
3. Sieved shaker
THEORY
The objective of conducting this is to check the proper grading of cement as fine cement have quicker action with water and gain early strength. Finer the cement more surface area of aggregates covered by it. It must be noted that the fineness of grinding does not alter the total quantity of head liberated by it changes the rate of heat developed due to change in square area. Excessing fineness ,however it undesirable due to following reasons:
· Cost of grinding cement to higher degree of fineness is considerable
· Greater fineness required greater amount of gypsum for proper working
Fineness % =<!–[if gte msEquation 12]>weight of residualweight of cement taken<![endif]–>
×100
The maximum residue after sieving through sieve should be limited to 10% of weight in case of opc & 5% of weight of cement for rapid hardening Portland cement
OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION
Weight of cement taken( <!–[if gte msEquation 12]>w1<![endif]–>
) =200 gm
Weight of residual remained (<!–[if gte msEquation 12]>w0<![endif]–>
)=15 gm
Fineness % =<!–[if gte msEquation 12]> weight of residualweight of cement taken<![endif]–>
×100
= <!–[if gte msEquation 12]>15200<![endif]–>
×100
=7.5%
RESULT
The fineness percent of cement was found to be 7.5% which is within permissible limit
CONCLUSION
From this experiment, we concluded that the fineness of the cement can be determined in laboratory easily
PRECAUTION
1. The sieved should be well shake either by manually or by mechanically
2. The weight of residual remain should be weight carefully
