WATER ABSORBTION TEST OF BRICK
TITLE: WATER ABSORBTION TEST OF BRICK
OBJECTIVE: 1. To find the rate of absorption of water by brick
2. To know the class of the brick
3. To find the suitability of a brick for the construction work
MATERIALS REQUIRED
1. Brick
2. A sensitive balance
3. Bucket of water
THEORY
Water absorption is the amount of water absorbed by a brick. A good brick should not absorb more than 20–22% of water content by weight when immersed in water for 24 hours. In any case, it’s should not exceed 25% on the basis of the water absorption by brick. We can classify the bricks further into four classes i.e. first class brick whose water absorption is less than 20% , second class brick (20–22%) , third class brick (22–25%) and fourth class brick ( more than 25%). The percentage of water absorbed by brick when immersed in water for 24 hours can be calculated as
Weight of brick before absorption
W1
PROCEDURE
Firstly the brick is chosen from the heap and the dry weight is taken by keeping the brick in an oven at 105 to 115oC for some time. The brick is then immersed in water for 24 hours, and again it is wiped with damp cloth. The increase in weight of brick after immersion by brick.

The bricks were found to be 1st class brick and fit for construction.
CONCLUSION
Hence, the water absorption percentage can be determined and hence the class of brick and its suitability for construction work can be determined from this experiment.
SOURCES OF ERROR
1. Careless experimenter
2. Faulty instrument
3. Insufficient or excess amount of time of immersion of brick under water.
PRECAUTION
1. The brick should be completely dry at the initial condition.
2. The brick should be immersed in water for more than 16 hours.
3. Weight of the brick should be noted carefully.
