Architectural Services in Germany
In a global and ever-tighter networked world, the percentage of architectural services that take place across borders is continually growing. German Architects and Engineers provide services for international clients in
Germany and export their services around the world.
The term ‘German Engineering’ stands worldwide for quality and for a holistic and integrative form of practice. This goes hand-in-hand with the occupational image of German Architects and Engineers which is based on the aspiration to be a ‘Master Builder’, responsible for the en-tire project from start to finish. The German educational system and the normal scope of work follow this central principle, which is the key to guaranteeing high quality results.
International collaborations can only be successful if each party has the same understanding of their respective tasks and deliverables. Cultural and historical differences are a challenge that can, at the same time, be an enriching asset. The title ’Architect’ is the same worldwide. In practice, however, there are many differences between countries in terms of education, liability (legal systems), scopes of work and the way the profession defines itself.
As a part of a series of information brochures of the BDA, this brochure is intended to help potential clients and other planners involved in international projects to understand some of the main differences in building practice (the building practice’s understanding of itself) between Germany and English speaking countries
Approval, Licensing

German legislation gives the title ‘Architect’ strict protection. The title is awarded after registration with the German Chamber of Architects, a public institution. For registration, a diploma (Master) and 2 to 3 years of practice are of necessity. Apart from certain civil engineers, only listed ‘Architects’ are entitled to submit
planning documents for the purpose of obtaining planning permission from German construction authorities.
Law
Civil law is a legal system inspired by Roman law, the primary feature of which is that laws are written into a collection, codified, and not determined by judges. Civil law proceeds from abstractions, formulates general principles, and distinguishes substan-tive rules from procedural rules. It holds legislation as the primary source of law; the court system is usually inquisitorial, unbound by precedent, and composed of specially trained judicial officers and judges.
In Germany civil law is laid down in a code of law (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch
Architectural Services
In Germany architectural services are generally provided in the form of a contract for work and services based on civil law.
In the case of a contract to provide work and services, the architect undertakes to provide the client with work, i.e. to achieve a specified result of a physical nature. In return, the architect is paid the agreed fee by the client.
Training to be an architect
Consecutive academic studies (Bachelor-Master) take 5-6 years at German and Austrian universities.
The Bachelor degree from a German University of Applied Science takes a minimum of 3-4 years. Practical experience of 6 months at an architectural office is obligatory.

Procedure for foreign architects to take lisence
Again taking lisence is categorized into two parts for European countries and non European countries.european citizens can get it by giving 2 PE exams and passing governmentql criteria
For non European architects
Engineers from non-EU countries can now benefit from the new EU Blue Card, which gives highly skilled foreign immigrants the right to live and work in Germany. Because of the shortage of engineers this group has low entry requirements at the moment. This means an engineer only needs two things to get the Blue Card:
a university degree
a employment contract with a salary of at least €39,624 per year
The permit is valid for the duration of a work contract plus three months but no longer then four years. Blue Card holders can renew the permit or apply for a permanent residence permit after 33 months. Spouses of Blue Card holders are allowed to work in Germany without any restrictions. The permission has to be requested at the local Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners Office).
Language requirments
A precondition for working in Germany is often a certain level of proficiency in the German language. How good your German actually needs to be is very different. As a guideline: The bigger the company, the more international the field of work and the bigger the city or industrial region is, the less knowledge of German you will need. You can survive without any German when you work as an experienced mechanical engineer in the aerospace industry; e.g. at Airbus in Hamburg. But you will need really good German language skills if you want to work in a medium-sized construction company in a non-industrial area. It is recommended to have finished the German Level B1 when first applying for jobs. The application period gives you time to reach B2, which is usually good enough to start working.
Ingenieur
The professional title for an engineer is protected by law. You may not use the German word “Ingenieur” (e.g. in your résumé) until you have gone through the accreditation process. However, there are only a few special cases where you really need the title for your work. But you may face situations where it is a psychological advantage.
Non governmental and governmental architectural organizations.

4. International Union of Architects (UIA).(international)
1.BDA
BDA is known as the main organization for architects in Germany.it controls all the minor and major projects there. Since its founding in 1903, the Association of German Architects (BDA) has been committed to elevating and improving the function and meaning of architecture in service of society and the environment.
BDA Activities
The BDA promotes a planning and building culture that aims to enrich
residential space and improve quality of life through functionally and
aesthetically designed buildings, squares and cities. The BDA mediates between
clients and architects in order to support an autonomous planning culture free
of outside influence and advocates for broader use of open architectural
competitions. The association is also committed to assuring high-quality
education for the next generation of architects and urban planners.
The BDA communicates its objectives on the national level via annual public events like the Berliner Gespräch (Berlin Discussion) and BDA-Tag (BDA Day) along with numerous topical events, public forums and publications.
Regional Presence
One of the BDA’s particular strengths is its nationwide presence: Regional
Associations in all 16 German states are supplemented by various regional
subgroups. Through critical debate of planning and construction issues, the
awarding of numerous prizes and various additional activities – lectures,
exhibitions, workshops, publications – these BDA associations work hard to
promote a continuous discussion of local Baukultur.
BDA Magazine: der architekt
In the bimonthly magazine der architekt, experts from around
the world discuss architecture, architectural theory and urban planning with a
particular focus on interdisciplinary approaches. Technical research reports on
planning processes and implementation add an applied dimension to the
magazine. derarchitektbda.de
2.BAZ
DAZ is an initiative of the Association of German Architects, BDA. As an independent forum, the DAZ is responsible for the content and financing of its own program.
DAZ is a think-tank, a place for exchange, transmission and debate. In workshops, exhibitions, talks, film nights and book presentations, architects, city planners, artists, citizens, users and critics come together to discuss current issues in architecture, spatial production and urban life.
„Who makes the city?“ asks Creative Director Matthias Böttger in 2016. How can social objectives and formal synthesis, robust responsibility and fragile creativity be combined? How can speculative practice change architecture? Architecture´s task is not only to provide solutions, but to name and describe new challenges. Architecture provides no definitive answers, but remains open for questions – you are cordially invited to share and discuss!
Membership for BDA and BAZ
Since 1903, the BDA has brought together independent
architects and urban planners distinguished by the exceptional quality of their
work, their personal integrity and collegiality and their shared commitment to
Baukultur and professional performance. All members are appointed by the
Regional Associations.
The more than 5,000 members of the BDA are among the leading independent
architects in Germany. Their track record of success speaks for itself: every
third Euro invested in German construction is invested in a project involving a
BDA architect.
The BDA appoints only members whose character and work meet strict criteria;
appointment in the BDA is both an honour and a recognition of high-quality
work.
Full membership requires the following:
fulltime engagement as an independent architect
above average skill and achievement
personal integrity
architectural licence
Civil architects, salaried architects and other types of professionals – German or foreign – can be appointed Associate Members.
Salary and job situations
1.job situations
Germany industry has traditionally put a strong emphasis on science and technology. Germany has the highest number of employed engineering workers and the second highest share of engineering workers among all employees in the European Union. But, demographic trends are causing some concern. Currently 21% of engineering workers are older than 55 and many companies face severe replacement problems. The largest numbers of job vacancies in engineering are the Hamburg and Stuttgart areas as well as in the cities of Berlin and Munich. Work Permit requirements have been relaxed.
2.salary
The Architecture salaries in Germany range between 1,000 EUR
per month (minimum salary) to 5,000 EUR per month (maximum salary).
The median salary is 2,500 EUR per month, which means that half (50%) of people
working in Architecture are earning less than 2,500 EUR while the other half
are earning more than 2,500 EUR. The median represents the middle salary value.
Generally speaking, you would want to be on the right side of the graph with
the group earning more than the median salary.
Closely related to the median are two values: the 25th and the 75th
percentiles. Reading from the salary distribution diagram, 25% of people
working in Architecture are earning less than 2,000 EUR while 75% of them are
earning more than 2,000 EUR. Also from the diagram, 75% of people working in
Architecture are earning less than 3,700 EUR while 25% are earning more than
3,700 EUR.
