CONSISTENCY TEST OF CEMENT
OBJECTIVE
To make normal consistence cement paste
APPARATUS REQUIRED
1. Vicat’s apparatus
2. Digital weighing scale
3. Glass graduates
4. Mincing bowl
5. Cement
6. Water
THEORY
Consistency test is conducted to determine the percentage of water required for preparing cement pastes of standard consistency for other tests. For examples setting time, soundness and compressive strength .This test is performed with the help of vicat’s apparatus
Description of vicat’s apparatus:
The vicat’s apparatus consists of following parts:-
· A metal frame to which a movable rod weighing 300 Gram is attached.
· Movable rod is provided with a releasing pin to let the rod and attached with an indicators on a vertical scale graduated from 0 to 40 mm.
· A 10 mm diameters pluger is used for consistency test
· Non–porous plate
PROCEDURE
1. About 300 gm of cement was weight using the digital weighting scale
2. An amount of water ( about 30% by weight of cement) was measured using glass graduate this amount of water was nearly 20 to 33% of the amount of cement
3. Then the cement was mixed with water in the mixing bowl
4. The mould of the vicat’s apparatus was filled with the cement paste , the surface of the paste should be smoothed off level with the top of the mould as quickly as possible
5. The mould was placed in it’s place in the vicat’s apparatus and the 10 mm diameter plunger was used ,it was lowered till it touches the paste & then it was leaved falling freely
6. The depth from the vicat’s ruler was taken of the depth was between 5–7 mm , we can get the standard paste with normal consistency
OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION
Weight of cement (W)=300 gm
Volume of water used (V)=80 ml
Penetration after adding water=32 mm
Now
%of water by wt of cement = <!–[if gte msEquation 12]>volume of waterweight of cement<![endif]–> ×100
= <!–[if gte msEquation 12]>80300<![endif]–> ×100
=26.67%
RESULT
Hence ,the percentage of water by weight of cement for consistency test of cement was found to be 26.67% by weight of cement
CONCLUSION
We conclude from this practical that we can find out the flexible point at which the cement is easily workable
PRECAUTION
1. The weight of cement should be taken carefully
2. The paste of cement be made carefully by adding required amount slowly
3. The plunger of vicat’s apparatus should be just touching the mould initially
